The Long Version
Carly Black is a Kentucky-based author who writes psychological thrillers, mysteries, and horror. She started telling dark stories long before she started writing them down, and once she started, she couldn't stop.
Her debut novel, Bloodlines, came from a question she couldn't shake: what if the thing you'd always wanted to know about yourself turned out to be the thing you most needed to bury? That question became a psychological thriller about family secrets, obsession, and the slow unraveling of a woman who thought she was just doing genealogy research.
Her short fiction tends to follow investigators, librarians, and ordinary people who stumble into things they weren't meant to find. She's drawn to the uncanny: the moment when something perfectly ordinary stops making sense. A ball that rolls in a straight line across an uneven floor. A journal that knows your name. A cabin that changes you.
Carly writes dark fiction that trusts its readers to sit with difficult things. Her books don't flinch from violence or trauma, but they're not gratuitous for its own sake.
